say hello to my new baby.

Do you all remember, a while back when I did a post on my love of old fashioned typewriters, and how I desperately, desperately wanted one? For practical reasons, as well as dreamy ones?

Mum and I were at the thrift store two days ago. (Did I mention how much I really love thrift stores?). I was sitting on one of the (frankly, really ugly) old sofas they had for sale, reading a paperback Confessions of a Shopaholic that I had found in the bookshelf. Mum glanced over at me and said "Hey! Did you see that typewriter?" I looked over, and right next to me, on a little coffee table, was, not only a typewriter, but a lovely vintage typewriter.

Now, I don't know if you've all done the research like I have, but those things go for hundreds online. This one was priced at $20. I was ready to snatch it up, only I didn't have any money on me, and I felt bad about asking mum to spend more money on me, when she'd already bought me some nice clothes, and taken me out to lunch. I went over to one of the ladies in charge, who's sort of a friend, and asked her if she would mind holding it for me for at least a day, so I could decide if I really wanted to spend my last $20 on the typewriter. The lady said that they didn't do holds, but she could reduce it from $20 to $10 for me, if I liked.

I practically squealed. Mum agreed to buy it and have me owe her, I took it home and here it is! (Sorry for the crappy picture quality, they were taken with a crappy quality camera.)

Isn't it gorgeous? It's old, and therefore has a few kinks I need to work out. Mainly, the ink ribbon is almost dry, and the keys stick, but I just have to clean it up and get some new ribbon. But it's practically a dream come true! I had been willing to settle for one of those horrible plastic '80s typewriters, but instead I got an actual antique. I am so, so happy.

What's a 'dream' of yours that's come true?

  2. That's beautiful, and so nice of them to let you have it half off! Aren't thrift stores the best? :) I remember once I was about to sew myself a black corduroy coat--it was going to take a lot of time and $$. Then, at the last minute, I found the coat at the thrift store, for cheap!

  8. I LOVE! One of my favorite college memories is when one of my tutors let me come to his office to play with his old typewriter. It was way cooler than I thought it would be, and I was already expecting pretty cool! Have fun with your new friend. *smiles* God bless!
