Why I wear what I wear

by - January 26, 2012

Heaven knows I'm no fashion icon, and half the time, I have no idea what the right type of "cut" or "shape" for my body type is. See, I do like fashion, and I do like to look nice, but I also have absolutely no money, and am not overly concerned with what is fashionable. Most of the time, if I'm wearing a nice skirt or pair of pants, and a shirt that I like, I'm happy.

My general go-to out fit is usually a shirt than is loose around the middle (Not baggy, just loose. I'm a bit self-conscious about my weight) one of my favorite skirts, with either leggings or tights. I tend to go with leggings, since I find them more comfortable, even if they do look like I'm going to the gym. I wear tights when I'm going to Mass, usually. If I'm wearing something under my skirt, it's because I want to be able to move around more freely. I know the common suggestion for this would be to just wear pants, but I find my hips look huge in pants, and they're not really that comfortable.

I'm not really that fashion-adventurous. I wear what I'm comfortable wearing. I wear flats most of the time because I feel like an overly tall abomination in heels. (Not only that, but heels hurt!) I wear loose-ish shirts because I don't want to expose my waist that much. I wear skirts because most pants are just plain uncomfortable. I do wear pants, and I'm not completely against them, but in general, I prefer the feel of a skirt.

Part of this is just laziness. I don't like shopping, and I hate spending money. If I go to any store other than the thrift store, I can only buy one item, and the thrift store in my town doesn't have very many nice things. If I could find a  job, this would probably change. But then I'd want to start saving up for things like a new camera, a plane ticket, a learner's licence, a passport, Photoshop, computer classes, college...and none of these things are cheap.

To be honest, I would like to be able to dress nicer, more polished, more put together. I wish I could look more like I actually paid attention to what was fashionable, and every once in a while splurged on a really nice bag, or pair of shoes. And every now and then I do pick up a real gem at the thrift store, like yesterday I snagged a Calvin Klein pencil skirt (I adore pencil skirts) for $3.

If this sounds almost like I'm defending myself, it is in part because I am. I got a long comment (that I didn't publish because it was posted in the guestbook, and it certainly didn't belong there. Not only that, but it sounded like I knew the person, even though she posted as Anonymous, and I hate when people do that) that was sort of a criticism of my outfit choices. I'm not against helpful suggestions, and I certainly don't resent the comment. But being "subtly" sarcastic about some of my clothing irked me a little bit.

In the end, I wear what I like, and I try to look nice while I'm doing it.

  1. That's exactly how I am! (minus the skirts; jeans are my usual choice)

  2. I hate spending money on clothes too. My husband gets so irked with me, but if it isn't a fantastic deal then I just hate buying it! There aren't any thrift stores where I live (horrible!) but I catch good things on clearance and sales usually so that is a blessing! :)

I think you should dress how you want to dress. It is more important for YOU to be comfortable and happy then to just be someone else's "stylish."

  3. I'm the same way! I love my jeans sooooo much and button up shirts :]! I don't care if people think I look crummy like Jo March said " I'm comfortable and thats all that matters" or something along those lines. Wear what YOU like, who cares what they say your you not them.

  4. I like to be fairly nice looking too - and money is an issue for me as well. And I don't like to show off my waist too much either. I also wear skirts all the time, for the same reasons you mentioned. I couldn't agree with or support you more. :)

  7. I so like to dress for what is comfortable for me. It is nice to know that I am not the only one in the world who thinks skirts are more comfortable than pants! :) I like to dress nice as well. I must say I find it difficult to find stuff that fits without making me look plumper than I am. They seem to forget there are more curvy people out there who don't have anything like a strait figure, which is what it seems like most clothes are made for. It is annoying!

I awareded you on my blog! :)

  8. Oh my gosh. You sound *just* like me. It's insane. I seriously could have written that. I know I'm not terribly skinny, and that I am not chubby either. I'm somewhere in between, but even then, I don't like tight fitting things. AT ALL.

  9. Oh good heavens, who that actually knows you would criticize your style of dress? I see you every week at Mass and the only thing I don't like is that you're half my age and dress better than I do. (And I'm kidding about not liking it - I admire it!) You've got style, and you're gorgeous. That applies to your mother as well.
Also, agreed on skirts being more comfortable most of the time. I mean, I love my jeans for downtime, but between work and church I have to dress up 6 days a week, and skirts are just prettier. I don't like myself in dress pants.
I hope you don't mind my dropping in here today - this is the first I've seen of your blog, though I'd heard you had one. Blogging is a great escape and it can be embarrassing to have people you know in real life reading you, so I won't be bothered if you'd rather I stayed away.
